Nursing in the UK
This site aims to provide nurses who trained outside the UK with information on the procedures necessary to work as a registered nurse in the UK.
If you are a nurse who trained in the UK and are fully registered with the NMC, click here to enter the NursingNetUK jobs website.
Most nurses will not need this information as you will be given guidance by the agency that has recruited you. UK employers do not usually offer jobs to overseas applicants who apply to them directly.
There are legal requirements to enter the UK as well as requirements in terms of language ability, education, training and experience as a nurse. Because details on entry into the UK may change, and because each application for entry onto the NMC register are assessed individually, we have tried to refer you to the appropriate source of up to date information rather than include all the details within this site.
We have found no employers who are prepared to take individual enquiries from overseas trained nurses, most employers are involved in government to government agreements or are using local nurse recruitment agencies.
Agencies who offer you jobs on behalf of UK employers will help you with your applications for NMC registration, work permits etc.
However should you need to make your own application you will find that all of the points below are covered in more detail within the site - click on the arrows above or on the links in the list below to find out more.
In order to work as a Registered nurse in the UK, an overseas-trained nurse needs to:
• be able to speak English to a specified standard
• be registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council
• obtain an appropriate work permit for the UK
• obtain appropriate visas for entry to the UK
• have an offer of work in the UK
